Helicopter Joy rides – New addition to Goa Tourism

Amid opposition from different quarters, Goa Tourism is all set to introduce helicopter joy rides to make visit to Goa all the  more memorable. However, it has cancelled its formal launch date.  Helicopter joy ride was introduced as a part of Goa Tourism, and it was a deal which was signed with Pawan Hans Company.  It is said that it will start soon.

The reason for the cancellation of helicopter joy ride formal date is stated that the Union Tourism Minister, Mahesh Sharma, could not make it to Panaji because of prior commitments and other tasks. Commercial operation of the joy ride will commence in a day or two. Given the fact that it is a demand of present day tourism industry, helicopter joy ride can add to the revenue of Goa tourism.

The agreement has been signed between the Pawan Hans Company and the GTDC for flying Bell-206 helicopters. The take-off destination will be Panaji and land at Aguada helipad located across Mandovi River. It was in the year 1983 that the helipad was constructed at the time of Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in case of emergency evacuation. It is stated that the opposition to start the project is not substantiated and if the need be, police security will be taken to go ahead with the project.
The protest was led by Michael Lobo, a BJP MLA. Also spokesman of Congress, Agnelo Fernandes decided to stage protests right on the helipad located at Aguada at the time of arrival of inaugural flight.  BJP MLA Michael Lobo and members decided to ensure that the helicopter does not land here.

Agnelo Fernandes  added that owners of local guest house have expressed worry as the landing of helicopter will not only affect the flora and fauna of the plateau but will also create lots of noise pollution.

GTDC and Pawan Hans together countered the opposition which is raised by the industry stakeholders from Sinquerim and Candolim to new service and the locals. They have stated that these objections are baseless as well as frivolous. They also added that helicopter rides will neither lead to noise pollution nor damage the area of Sinquerim and Candloim or will turn the water rough.

Pawan Hans also added that the helicopter deployed for joy ride is Bell-206 which is a two-blade single engine helicopter which will create very little noise in comparison to other machines. Helicopters are flown at the height of 500 feet above ground, thus decreasing the noise which is comparatively lesser when compared to commercial airlines. The take-off as well as landing phase is near about 30 to 40 seconds, in addition, down draft of the rotor causes no harm to flora and fauna of the surrounding area.
There are different purposes for which helicopters are used. These are also used for transporting people to pilgrimage destinations such as Tirupti, Amarnath, Vaishnodevi and Kedarnath to name a few. Introduction of helicopter rides will add to the profile of Goa Tourism. Helicopter rides will also booth the employment opportunities as well as local economics.

It is within the property of GTDC that the new helicopter joy rides services have been introduced. The property area measures near about 10,000 square metres and is being developed to meet this objective in the best possible way.
